I am an unabashed admirer of the\u00a0#photography<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0of\u00a0Joe McNally<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>. \u00a0Before I started the whole\u00a0#photoshop<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0guy thing, I stood slack jawed at his photographic work, and hoped to be able to get ‘as good as’ him. \u00a0There are three men that I revere photographically, and he is tops on that list. It’s funny because a lot of what I do is so vastly different from what inspires me.<\/p>\n

Joe’s most recent work includes a commission to create a book for the North Shore\u00a0#LongIsland<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Jewish Hospital system. \u00a0Here on G+, i feel like we’ve become a vat of slow exposure clouds and water, selfies, steel wool shots, \u00a0and HDR (guilty) so I could immediately understand how thinking of a book of a hospital system may not be tops… but go through the blog post and check out the images there.. \u00a0http:\/\/bit.ly\/13xQoBK<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

I always tell people, if you’re going to admire someone, know exactly\u00a0why<\/em>\u00a0you do. \u00a0If you like X photographer, you should study their work, look at patterns, and be able to write down\u00a0what<\/em>\u00a0it is you admire about the pieces. \u00a0For me, its been two things. \u00a0First- \u00a0the ability to use light in a manner where it\u00a0fits<\/em>in a scene – and nothing more. \u00a0Second – the ability to tell a\u00a0story<\/em>\u00a0with the images. \u00a0To keep you looking at them and wondering about the shot, or incite an emotion. \u00a0Putting them together like that makes for an incredibly compelling package.<\/p>\n

Joe tackles this project and returns something that feels a lot like a photo essay on the system. \u00a0Artfully done, it brings you through a gamut of emotions, without a gratuitous hosing of off camera flash.<\/p>\n

McNally sees himself as a generalist – but its at this point that I disagree. \u00a0To me, I see him as one of the most sought after specialists. The photographer who can come in and chisel out a story with\u00a0whatever\u00a0<\/em>form of light is needed.<\/p>\n
