After Photoshop World and a quick one day stop in Washington DC for my Photoshop for Photographers tour, I was offered a chance by my friend Charles King<\/a> to go on a one on one tour of Luray Caverns<\/a>\u00a0in Virginia. \u00a0A quick 2 hour drive, we were descending 187 below the earths surface to check out the worlds largest natural musical instrument – The Great Stalacpipe Organ. \u00a0I thought to myself, “A Cavern? Under the Earth? and an Organ? \u00a0My inner Batman-Meets-Hans Zimmer<\/a> image is complete!”<\/p>\nTruth be told, my fascination came from many many years ago. When I was in school, I was very impressed and inspired by 18th and \u00a019th century stuff. \u00a0I enjoyed very much the work of Gustav Dore<\/em><\/a>– specifially his illustrations for Dante’s Divine Comedy<\/em>. As I walked down further into the cavern, I couldnt help but hear Pergelosi’s Stabat Mater<\/em> <\/a>\u00a0ringing in my head (link:\u00a0http:\/\/youtu.be\/h9ZET0kU9qs\u00a0) . \u00a0I made many frames of the caverns – but I just wanted to get to the organ to try for a shot.<\/p>\nThis was shot with the Canon 5D Mark III<\/a> on a 16-35 lens. To get the light in front of me as a silhouette we used a 600EX with a ST-E3-RT on the camera.<\/p>\nI really like the yellows and orange in the shot, but I think this is going to be one of those that I am going to make for myself for as a black and white. \u00a0A big thanks to Charles and the folks at Luray Caverns<\/a> for the opportunity to get an image out of my head onto paper. \u00a0I really appreciate it!<\/p>\n
